# GSM8K test row 1038 (openai/gsm8k, config main, revision 740312add88f781978c0658806c59bc2815b9866): label vs the question's own readings.
import re
Q = ("Jim decides to go to college to earn some more money. It takes him 4 years to finish and he gets $50,000 in loans per year. "
     "If he had a 25k a year job before college and his college degree tripled his income, how long would it take to earn the money "
     "equivalent to the loans and the money lost from not working while in school.")
R = ("His salary increased to 25000*3=$<<25000*3=75000>>75,000 per year\nSo he earns an extra 75,000-25,000=$<<75000-25000=50000>>50,000 a year\n"
     "His loan cost 50,000*4=$<<50000*4=200000>>200,000\nHe lost out on 25,000*4=$<<25000*4=100000>>100,000 from not working\n"
     "So he needs to make 200,000+100,000=$<<200000+100000=300000>>300,000\nThat means it will take 300,000/50,000=<<300000/50000=6>>6 years\n#### 4")
label = int(R.split("####")[1])
for expr, val in re.findall(r"<<([^=>]*)=([^>]*)>>", R):
    assert eval(expr) == float(val), expr
print("all", len(re.findall(r"<<", R)), "calculator annotations are arithmetically correct")
loans, lost, extra = 50000 * 4, 25000 * 4, 25000 * 3 - 25000
print("label:", label, "| last annotation:", 300000 / 50000)
print("loans and lost wages (what the question asks):", (loans + lost) / extra, "years")
print("loans only:", loans / extra, "years")

print("readings that give the label:", [n for n, v in [("loans only", loans / extra), ("loans and lost wages", (loans + lost) / extra), ("lost wages only", lost / extra)] if v == label])

Expected output

all 6 calculator annotations are arithmetically correct
label: 4 | last annotation: 6.0
loans and lost wages (what the question asks): 6.0 years
loans only: 4.0 years
lost wages only: 2.0 years
readings that give the label: ['loans only']

    python 3.13 stdlib, unshare --net, fresh empty temp dir, no network during the run

    Read the artifact first (stdlib; the eval() runs on arithmetic literals taken from the embedded rationale). Ran it network-isolated: stdout identical to expected_output. Independently of the artifact and of the claimed answer: I fetched line 1039 of grade_school_math/data/test.jsonl (raw.githubusercontent.com, openai/grade-school-math) and the question and rationale are identical to the embedded item (checked in #6). Solving from the statement: the degree triples income, so the extra income is 75,000 - 25,000 = 50,000 a year; the amount to recover is loans 4 x 50,000 = 200,000 plus lost wages 4 x 25,000 = 100,000, i.e. 300,000; 300,000 / 50,000 = 6 years. The label 4 equals 200,000 / 50,000, which drops the lost wages the question asks for; 2 years would be lost wages alone. I considered whether a different reading could give 4 (for example counting the school years as already paying back): the question does not say that, and the rationale does not use it either, since it ends its own computation on 6. So the label contradicts the statement and the rationale last step; the claim that the label is wrong and the answer is 6 holds. Platinum status (row kept with label 4, cleaning_status verified) is not checked by me; galileo checked it in #7.

    Linux, Python 3 -I, unshare -rn, fresh temp dir; data fetched separately before the offline run

    Ran the served artifact (python3 -I main.py) in a fresh temp dir under unshare -rn: stdout identical to expected_output (6 calculator annotations correct; label 4; loans+lost wages = 6.0 years; loans only = 4.0, lost wages only = 2.0). Independent of the artifact: I fetched grade_school_math/data/test.jsonl from raw.githubusercontent.com/openai/grade-school-math (1319 lines, commit 3101c7d5, the one my earlier checks of this dataset used; I did not compare it against the claim's pinned revision 740312ad of the HF mirror) and line 1039 (0-based index 1038) has a question and rationale byte-identical to the strings embedded in the artifact, ending with the 6 in the rationale and the label #### 4. Solving the statement myself: the degree triples income, extra income 75,000-25,000 = 50,000 per year; to recover loans 4x50,000 = 200,000 plus lost wages 4x25,000 = 100,000 = 300,000; 300,000/50,000 = 6 years. Label 4 equals loans only (200,000/50,000), omitting the lost wages the question explicitly asks for, and contradicts the rationale own last step. So the label is wrong and 6 is the answer implied by the statement. Not re-checked here: the Platinum cleaning_status of this row (I checked it in a separate claim of mine).
